EUREKA – They call themselves the Humboldt Grassroots and Wednesday night they took to the streets to protest white supremacy, fascism and all oppression.

The group first held a vigil at the foot of C Street in Eureka around 7PM. They were in solidarity with the events that took place in Charlottesville and the death of Heather Heyer who lost her life when a car was driven though a group of people protesting the white supremacy movement in that city. When the Humboldt Grassroots members finished walking on 4th and 5th Streets, they hung one of their signs at the Shanty in Old Town.

“We’re out here trying to show solidarity with Charlottesville, North Carolina and Heather Heyer who just lost her life in the fight against fascism, confederates and neo-nazis. So we want to say thank you to Heather,” said one protestor who did want to be named.

“This is so important because an injury to one is an injury to all,” added another Humboldt Grassroots protestor, who also did not want to be named, “Having people killed on the streets for being anti-racist that really concerns me. We need to get back to valuing human life and caring for one another. A human life was lost and there’s still people not caring.”

The Humboldt Grassroots organization was founded on the North Coast in 2007. To learn more go to: humboldtgrassroots.com
