BROOKINGS – It’s a pretty scary feeling having such a huge fire in this close of proximity. The City of Brookings is under a level-1 pre-evacuation order due to the massive Chetco Bar Fire.

Officials are saying the blaze has become the number one priority fire in the nation due to the populations that are at risk. Some outlying areas have already been evacuated. The Curry County Sheriff’s Department confirms at least 7 homes have been destroyed.

The fire has burned over 102,000 acres and is 5.2 miles northeast of Brookings. It is 0-percent contained at this time. Residents are urged to conserve water and monitor local media outlets and other official channels for the latest information. A Red Cross shelter has been set up at Riley Elementary School in Gold Beach.

Due to the fire’s activity and concern for firefighter and public safety, there are trail, road and area closures in place in the Gold Beach and Wild Rivers Ranger Districts. For updates go to: inciweb.nwcg.gov
