Eureka city settles $50,000 in occupy protest

EUREKA – The city of Eureka’s insurance carrier, Redwood Empire Municipal Insurance Fund,  will have settled with a plaintiff regarding an alleged injury during an arrest in 2012. Andrew Hamer will be awarded $50,000 after he claims he was injured while being handcuffed during the arrest.

Hamer was arrested during an occupy standoff at the county courthouse where Eureka Police Department, along with Humboldt County Sheriff’s office made several arrests. The city of eureka says virtually all the events during the arrest were captured on video, and that they support the accounts of the defendants officers. The settlement is noted as an economic decision based on the defense costs for a federal court trial.

The city says it’s confident its police officers acted within the law of the department and the city.
