Eureka to discuss zoning codes at general plan update study session

EUREKA – Eureka City Council and the Planning Commission will convene for the eighth in a year long series of special study sessions to update the general plan.

Staff opted for the year long process to allow members and commissioners the chance to analyze each part of the general plan that establishes goals and priorities for the next twenty years. The plan is up for adoption in August of next year and requires an update to the city’s zoning codes. That will be the focus of Tuesday’s session.

Development Services Director Rob Holmlund described zoning codes as a community’s contract with each other that dictates what a place should look and feel like. Holmlund said codes control everything from the height of fences to whether or not industrial areas can border residential all of which has a monumental influence on property and home values.

That meeting begins at 4:00p.m. in Council Chambers.
