Public input wanted for proposed homeless day center in Eureka

EUREKA – City and law enforcement officials in Eureka are asking for public input on a proposed community center for the homeless at Wabash and Union.
Betty Kwan Chinn Homeless Foundation hopes to launch a six month pilot project to operate a homeless day center at 1685 Union Street.
It would give approximately thirty people a place to eat, sleep and access services Monday through Friday.
In its project proposal, the foundation said the center will reduce negative impacts associated with homelessness including reducing pedestrian traffic and litter.
You can share feedback on the proposal Thursday night at 6:30 at the site of the proposed center.
City of Eureka Homeless Services Program Manager Lynette Mullen said, “This is in a neighborhood and this would be a new facility in that neighborhood so it’s important for the city to gather input to hear about any concerns from residents, neighboring businesses that folks may have. We definitely want to hear from people because we do realize there could be impacts that could be perceived as negative as well as the positive impacts of giving people a place to go.”
If the project moves forward, the center would open in mid-October.
