Redwood Pride continues the celebrations and conversation

ARCATA – Humboldt County had their first ever Redwood Pride festival today.

Last year Humboldt Pride dissolved after 24 years but this year Redwood Pride was here to not only continue the celebration, but the discussion as well. Redwood Pride is a group of community members who came together with a purpose; they say their main goal is to address the problems in the community and to bring an open discussion about those issues. Community organizer, Jonathon Salinas, says when planning this event they were most focused on how to create a community that can have an open dialog. The tables that were set up around the plaza were organizations with community resources specifically geared towards the LGBT community. Salinas says he hopes the event helps connect the community to the resources available to them.

This past week redwood pride held a discussion panel on racism and white privilege, as well as by-stander intervention training on HSU’s campus. They hope to have another pride festival in Arcata next year.
