Homeless man uninjured in fire, surveillance cameras do not reveal cause

EUREKA – A homeless man who woke up to his sleeping bag on fire Saturday morning was not injured, Eureka Police say.

The Eureka Police Department and Humboldt Bay Fire responded to the report on the 400 block of K Street at 1:15 Saturday morning.

The man in the sleeping bag says he did not see how the fire started, and all surrounding surveillance cameras were “either non-functioning or facing opposite directions.”

It has not been determined if the fire as accidental or intentional.

Senior Detective John Gordon has been assigned to the case, and any tips should be directed to him at (707) 441-4032.

This comes after an incident of arson against a homeless man sleeping on the steps of the Presbyterian Church in Arcata last weekend, and it is still under investigation if these two incidents have any relation.
