Helena fire 85% contained, change in road closures to come

TRINITY COUNTY – Firefighters have made strides on containing the destructive Helena and Fork fires, and Caltrans workers want drivers to be aware of upcoming road closures.

The fires, that reached above 21,000 acres and destroyed over 70 homes, are now 85% contained while the cause remains under investigation.

In an effort to complete emergency road repairs and damage caused by the flames, Caltrans District 2 will be closing State Route 299 between Junction City and Helena in order to move large hazardous trees and rocks.

If you need to get through, starting this Saturday through next Sunday, single-time openings will be in effect at 9AM and 3:30PM, with continuous one-way controlled traffic overnight.

This only excludes Sunday, October 1st, when continuous controlled traffic will be in place the whole day.
