ARCATA – The library at Humboldt State University is hosting a banned book read aloud and discussion in honor of banned book week.

Many of these banned books you’ve probably heard of, they’re typically very popular pieces of literature that for one reason or another are not considered suitable by a particular group of people.

These books usually have large readership and are often challenged for being considered damaging. They range from older titles like The Diary of Ann Frank, to more recent pieces, like The Hunger Games. The books on display here have been banned for a variety of different reasons and in various places, from individual community libraries to entire countries. Librarians here at HSU believe these books are important because they get people thinking and asking questions.

Banned book week happens in libraries across the country and is intended to bring awareness to literature censorship and create discussion on why these books are banned.
