Humboldt’s elected officials, community stepping up to help fire victims

EUREKA – In response to the fires, the North Coast is stepping up to help those who had to evacuate as well as those who may have nothing left.
Eureka City Council Member Austin Allison asked for donations on Facebook then partnered with Humboldt Bay Fire which offered Station 1 as a collection point. And the community responded.
In less than three hours, the room was nearly full and donations kept pouring in.
Allison will deliver food, clothing, and other supplies to evacuation centers in the Santa Rosa area.
And the giving didn’t stop there. Volunteers are also heading to Santa Rosa to cook for evacuees.
Community members donated several thousand dollars in just one night so supervisor Rex Bohn and four others could head out before dawn Wednesday morning. Their trucks were loaded with water, a grill, and thousands of hot dogs and hamburgers. The group will cook at whichever evacuation center they’re assigned to address the immediate need for food.
Bohn said the community’s quick reaction is yet another example of Humboldt’s desire to help those in need.
If you’d like to help, you can drop off donations at McKinleyville Ace Home and Garden Center on Central Avenue beginning Wednesday.
