77-year-old fisherman dies after being pulled overboard

EUREKA – A 77-year-old fisherman died after being pulled overboard into the waters off Humboldt Bay.
Humboldt County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Melvin Vanronk of Redcrest.
The U.S. Coast Guard received a report of a man overboard about fifteen miles off the coast of Humboldt Bay and launched a life boat and helicopter just after noon Wednesday.
The crew of the Ruth R fishing vessel said that gear had wrapped around the propeller when Vanronk became entangled and was pulled overboard.
Rescuers were unable to locate the man when they arrived around 12:30. He was spotted about 200 yards away then pulled in to the life boat. He was unresponsive when life saving efforts were initiated.
Vanronk was transported to the hospital by ambulance but died from his injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office said it appears Vanronk drowned. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
