New Humboldt Bay Firefighter sworn in, starts work less than an hour later

EUREKA – Humboldt Bay Fire added a new crew member Friday.
26-year-old Del Norte County native Tyler Gillespie served with the U.S. Forest Service before volunteering for Humboldt Bay Fire.
He just completed his four week academy classes where his colleagues said he worked hard and always had a smile on his face.
His friends and family looked on as he took the oath of office and his father pinned his badge.
Gillespie will start his regular schedule Sunday but is already at work. He covered a shift not even an hour after he was sworn in.
“I’ve learned from all the people around me, my friends, my coworkers, my peers, people I’ve looked up to for a long time and now I feel like I’m giving it back to them,” Tyler Gillespie said. “I get to fulfill this dream and work together in a pretty tight knit group of men and women. It’s exciting.”
