Humboldt County continues ADA compliance efforts

EUREKA – Crews are walking around Eureka taking measurements as part of an effort to bring county facilities into compliance with the ADA.
After identifying barriers to disabled access more than ten years ago, last September Humboldt County entered into a consent decree with the U.S. Department of Justice to bring services and facilities into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
In part, the agreement required payment of $275,000 to affected individuals, updates to the website and signage, and upgrades to about fifty county-owned or -leased buildings.
An independent contractor was hired to evaluate the paths of travel from transit stops to those buildings. Workers have been taking measurements and pictures around Eureka over the last week. That will help the agencies determine what work needs to be done and how much it will cost.
Initial estimates for full compliance top $17 million.
