Eureka, Ca., (KIEM)- The number of Native Americans in jail is often disproportionate compared to overall population size. For example, there are 368 people currently incarcerated at the Humboldt County Jail. 61 are Native American.

That’s why members of the Hoopa tribe (most of whom are also addiction or substance abuse councilors) held a talking circle and traditional card game for inmates.

“It makes us feel closer to home.” Alvin Wingo, a participating inmate explains. The value of the clinic-style concept, organizers say is in the healing it provides.

People in jail have to prepare for life outside. Having opportunities to re-connect with culture, or take part in spiritual healing is part of that preparation according to clinicians.
