A New Hope? CR Cadet Class 120 joins the force

Eureka, Ca., (KIEM)- Thursday College of the Redwoods celebrated their 120th graduating class of cadets from the University’s basic law enforcement academy. Of the 22 men and women on stage, 7 have already been hired by local agencies. One, a young man named Travis Sherrod is about to kick off his career in the Arcata Police Department.

“It’s an honor, I got to graduate with who I call my friends and family now. The biggest thing is, I can actually step out and make a difference.” Sherrod said.

His perception of Police Officers hasn’t always been good, and his eagerness to join the force has a lot to do with his desire to be the change he wants to see in modern American policing.

“It’s not just about enforcing the law, it’s about bringing the community together and getting their trust back into you.” Sherrod explained. “I really came from not understanding what a police officer was (I didn’t really respect police officers) to as I got older, I know what they are there for…. I feel like I’m able to speak with different people, just because of my background. If I’m able to speak to them and help them understand and show them who I am as a person, not just someone with a badge wearing a uniform. That’s what I really want to do… here I come!”

As graduates were congratulated and embraced by family members, agency heads like Sheriff William Honsal, Eureka’s Captain Steve Watson, and Fortuna’s Chief William Dobberstein were also in the audience.

As Sherrod prepared to join those behind the badge he also made this promise to the community he belongs to, and now hopes to serve: “We’re here to protect everyone, we’re here to be your friends, and no, not all police officers are bad. I changed my idea… we’re men and women who have families just like you. We want to fix your issue, we want to fix your problem, so give us the chance to change your opinion. We will make you proud.”
