Norovirus confirmed in two students attending Eureka City Schools

EUREKA – Norovirus has spread beyond South Bay Union School District. The virus has reached Eureka City Schools, but is not severe enough to prompt a closure.

Health officials have confirmed two cases of highly contagious norovirus in students attending Eureka City Schools, one at the high school and another at Winship. Fifty additional families held students out suspecting their child may have contracted the virus.

In an attempt to minimize the spread, the district is taking extra measures to sanitize classrooms each night and is in regular communication with public health to monitor the situation.

Superintendent Fred Van Vleck said the state will make up for lost funding if a school closes due to an emergency. The district will make closure decisions based on what’s best for students and families. Van Vleck added sometimes staying home is the best option, “One thing I would encourage parents to do is if their children are showing symptoms of the norovirus please keep them home because it’s all of our responsibility to stop the spread of this. It can be really uncomfortable for students or anybody for that matter. I have three children in the district and all three of them are in school [Tuesday] and thankfully they are not showing any signs.”
