Longtime Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputy retires with dreams left to chase

EUREKA, CA. – After nearly a quarter of a century, another Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputy is calling it a career.

Deputy Greg Bickel started with the Sheriff’s Office 24 years ago, and Friday he welcomed retirement.

Bickel played many roles within the department – first as a reserve deputy at the airport, than a correctional officer in the Humboldt County Jail.

Then he committed to full-time patrol at the McKinleyville substation, before transitioning into the Drug Enforcement Unit.

He eventually became a school resource officer, and a courtroom security deputy.

Bickel collected a wide range of experiences during his service, and says he will still provide extra help in the courts and the airport, along with pursuing his dream of traveling the world on his motorcycle.
