Trinidad council to discuss lighthouse litigation

TRINIDAD – Trinidad City Council will hold a special meeting to discuss a lawsuit over the proposal to move Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse.
Threatened by a landslide since last year’s rainy season, the city granted an emergency permit to move the landmark approximately 20′ across the hill, and work began last week to do just that.
According to the agenda, council will meet in closed session with the city attorney Tuesday morning to discuss legal actions brought by the Yurok Tribe and Tsurai Ancestral Society.
Not much is known about the discussion. It follows days of protests by local tribal groups and members over the relocation of the lighthouse.
They say the proposed site is sacred and don’t want to see ancestral gravesites disturbed.
Trinidad Civic Club owns the lighthouse and say not moving the structure has the potential to cause similar harm.
Again the meeting is Tuesday morning at 10:00 at Trinidad Town Hall.
