Wanted assault suspect and teen arrested following Hoopa pursuit

HOOPA, CA. – A wanted assault suspect and a teenage are arrested following a pursuit in Hoopa.

Wanted 32-year-old Cory Michael Nelson was spotted by Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office deputies Wednesday around 2:30 near Boozer Lane and Highway 96 in a blue truck.

He sped south on Shoemaker Road inciting a pursuit.

Nelson turned onto Telescope Road, where he pulled over.

Backup arrived, and in the truck, deputies found four boxes of ammunition and five pounds of marijuana.

Deputies also found a handgun on Shoemaker Road they believe was thrown out of the truck.

Nelson was arrested on the following charges:

  • felon in possession of ammunition
  • felon in possession of a firearm
  • carrying a loaded firearm in a public place
  • possession of stolen property
  • flight from a traffic officer
  • hit and run with injury
  • assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm

His passenger, 19-year-old Nathaniel Heath Edwards, was also arrested for carrying a loaded firearm in a public place and possession of stolen property.
