Arcata, Ca., (KIEM)- In the 1980s Janet Eidsness was hired by the City of Arcata as the lead archaeologist in an excavation project off of 7th street. Her team discovered evidence one of the oldest settlements in Humboldt County. Year later, however, that history was forgotten. An urban trail was installed, a sports complex established.

On Saturday an interpretive sign was installed to ensure the historical relevance of the site is not completely forgotten. Eidsness says she hoped the marker will give people a glimpse back in time and serve as a way to honor the Wiyot people who first settled in Arcata. “This is Wiyot homeland.” She says.
