Fortuna officer to be honored for saving life

FORTUNA- One of the newest members of the Fortuna Police department will be honored for being a life-saver.

Officer Jordan Walstrom will receive the city’s police life-saving medal february 20th at the city council meeting.

Chief William Dobberstein says Walstrom saved a Fortuna man’s life last month, when the man began heavy bleeding after having a surgical procedure.

Walstrom arrived before paramedics, quickly assessing the situation as life-threatening, then applying a pressure dressing to stop blood from his femoral artery.

When that didn’t work, Walstrom — a former Eureka paramedic –then used a combat application tourniquet, stopping the blood loss and stabilizing the man until an ambulance arrived.
