Saved by the Snow-Cat: Hoopa man rescued from being stuck

HOOPA, CA. – A Hoopa man is lucky to be alive after his snowmobile got stuck in a snowdrift, stranding him.

The 50-year-old man went snowmobiling Sunday evening in the Big Hill road area, but didn’t return.

Monday morning, his son reported him missing.

Hoopa Tribal Police asked for assistance due to heavy snow and icy conditions.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office deployed its new sno-cat vehicle, and they found the man about 10 miles up big hill road.

He had been outside for about nine hours in below freezing temperatures, and was treated at the scene for mild hypothermia.

This is the first time the sno-cat has been used since it was bought with help from Measures Z and S.
