MCKINLEYVILLE, CA. – Four members of the Coast Guard who played a role in a brave rescue are being recognized.

On October 14th of last year near Crescent City, these officers saved a 16-year-old hiker who had become stranded on a cliff-face 300 feet above the ocean.

They brought their helicopter to a hover about 240 feet above the stranded hiker.

The hiker was then hoisted into the helicopter and the taken to Del Norte Airport without injury.

Due to the complexity of the rescue, the Coast Guard Air Medal will be awarded to Lieutenant Jacob Dorsey, Officer Nicholas Gardner and Officer Jeff Bothman, and the Coast Guard Commendation Medal will be presented to Lieutenant Edwin Forteza.

The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday at 1:30PM at Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay in McKinleyville.
