Eureka police recognize community members for helping children in danger

EUREKA, CA. – In the wake of danger, two children were rescued by Eureka community members, and now they are each being recognized for their actions by local police.

Back in August, two children were found wandering alone late in the evening, unclothed and dirty, near WinCo in Eureka, one with a blanket.

Two employees, Steven Moreno and Kerra Hogue-Lindow, saw the children and removed a drug needle from the blanket.

They were joined with help from employee Jamie Peterson, and a Student Services Coordinator, Rachel Bass, who recognized the children while shopping.

Bass contacted teacher Alysha Simoni, who left her classroom with Luke Lancaster, to bring food and clothes to the children, and assist in locating the family.

Eureka police are now awarding these community members with a special “challenge coin,” for representing the values of valor, service and community by stepping up to keep the children safe.
