Pedestrian in fatal hit and run crash identified

MCKINLEYVILLE – The California Highway Patrol is asking for the public’s assistance in their investigation of a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run. The Humboldt County Coroner says the victim is 34 year-old Richard Brandon Freeman of Hoopa.

The crash happened last night just before nine o’clock – when CHP received a call about a man lying in the center divider of Highway 101 northbound, at the State Route 200 interchange.

When first responders arrived, they immediately began CPR, but Freeman died at the scene. The CHP says it appears he was in the roadway and struck by a car, which did not stop.

A possible suspect vehicle is described as a 1992 to 2000 Ford Econoline van, or similar van cab, and chassis. It’s believed to be white, and may have damage to the driver side headlight and turn signal.

Officers say anyone with information on the vehicle, or Freemans’ whereabouts leading up to the accident, should call Humboldt CHP:  (707) 822-5981
