Students of Fortuna Elementary set their books aside to incorporate some hands-on learning outside of the classroom for their annual “Bike Rodeo.”

Fortuna Police and California Highway Patrol put students to the test today in a five course bicycle safety program this morning at Fortuna Elementary. CHP Officer, Paul Craft, tells us, this is a way for students to learn from a different perspective. Officers also gave students preventative tips, in the case they need assistance while riding without their parents.

CHP, Fortuna police, and staff of Fortuna Elementary hope students will take the skills they learned today with them through summer and the years to come. They hope that students will make sure to wear properly fitting helmets and follow the rules on the road.

About 30 of the helmets used at the Bike Rodeo today were donated to CHP by Arcata business owner, Charlie Jordan.
