Fortuna giving away free compost

FORTUNA- Turning spoil into soil, the City of Fortuna will be giving away free “class a” compost through the end of this week.

Compost is available for pick-up Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 180 Dinsmore Drive in Fortuna. Chief treatment Plan Operator, Doug Culbert, tells us The compost has no restrictions and can be used on gardens, lawns, food, or flower pots. He says most people are weary to use it for vegetable gardens, but he emphasizes that it is regulated by the State of California, Federal EPA, and the Humboldt County Department of Environmental Health. Culbert believes this is a great “commodity” for the community to take advantage of.

Culbert says, as part of their permit, they are only allowed to give away two and a half yards of compost per address, which is the size of a full pick up. He’d also like to remind everyone to bring tarps to transport the soil from the facility.
