Arcata City Council considers ‘The Village’ student housing project

ARCATA, CA. (KIEM) – Books or bed sheets? A severe housing shortage has many Humboldt State University students facing homelessness.

According to the Homeless Student Advocate Alliance, about 19% of HSU students have experienced homelessness – but a new project could create new housing for those in need.

Over the past two days, Arcata City Council has met to consider the project called The Village, which would accommodate 602 students.

Some concerned neighbors point to increased noise and possible safety problems.

The project is still in the planning phases, and Arcata City Council will hold a special public meeting to tour the proposed site on Tuesday, June 19.
