What it takes to become a guide dog for the blind

They train for a year, but not all qualify. We’re told only 42% of all dogs in training actually make it to be guide dogs for the blind.

Today the Fortuna library hosted Northern Humboldt Eyes for the blind. They tell us this is a perfect way to teach puppies in training to behave themselves in a quiet setting, all while being surrounded by children.

Through Northern Humboldt Eyes for the Blind, puppies are taught obedience and good household behavior. Volunteers of the organization will train the puppies anywhere from eight weeks to a year.
