Cal Fire says five fires in Weitchpec area started by arson

WEITCHPEC, Calif. (KIEM) – Five fires break out near Weitchpec, and Cal Fire points to arson as the cause.

At around 3:00AM Wednesday morning, crews were alerted to a fire near Martin’s Ferry Bridge.

Firefighters quickly put it out, but as they looked down the river, they saw more smoke.

They discovered four more fires spreading near highway 169, and Bald Hills Road.

It took the help of Hoopa Wildland Fire Department, Rio Dell Volunteer Fire, and the Arcata Fire District, along with three engines, and a water tender, to put a stop to the spread.

About three acres burned, and firefighters achieved one hundred percent containment by 7:00AM.

Cal Fire notes that these fires required personnel at a time when large fires in Northern California could’ve created a shortage of local firefighting resources.

They would like to remind everyone to be fire safe, and act responsibly this Fourth of July holiday.
