USDA joins federal partners in Salmonella investigation

Eureka, Ca., (KIEM)- The US Department of Food and Agriculture (USDA) is enlisting the help of other federal partners to monitor a salmonella reading outbreak in raw turkey products. Ninety people have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Reading have been reported from 26 states.

At this time, no single source has been identified as a source of the outbreak.  According to the Center for Disease Control, “In interviews, ill people report eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from many different locations. Two ill people lived in a household where raw turkey pet food was fed to pets.”

For now, consumers are reminded to wash their hands thoroughly after handling raw meat or poultry products, and to cook those products to the recommended temperature.
