Ad Hoc committee to look in to Humboldt County’s agreement with Red Deer Consulting

Eureka, Ca., (KIEM)- “These are vulnerable kids, so we need to make sure we provide them the best services possible,” Fifth District Supervisor Ryan Sundberg said at Tuesday morning’s Humboldt County Board of Supervisor’s meeting. He was responding to discussions about Red Deer Consulting.

The group has been working on behalf of DHHS Child Welfare Services, providing tribally specific cultural advising and mentoring services to children and youth. Tribal leaders have reached out to both First District Supervisor Rex Bohn and Sundberg, asking them not to renew the contract. For his part, Supervisor Bohn said he received comments from Bear River and Trinidad Rancheria on the topic.

“I think tribal leaders would be shocked that [Red Deer] contract has been in place for 3 years, we haven’t heard from them” Virgil Moorehead speaking at the Humboldt County Board of Supervisor’s meeting. (07/24/18)
The trouble is, the county’s contract with Red Deer has already expired. DHHS officials stated in today’s board meeting, they’re concerned about a lapse in services while a committee is assembled to review another contract.

Ultimately, the board would chose to have Bohn and Sundberg take the lead on an ad hoc committee to look into the group’s effectiveness. To address the time sensitive nature of the subject, the board decided to ask Red Deer to continue providing services (and receiving payment) until October, when a more permanent decision could be made.
