One fatality confirmed in nearly 29,000 acre Carr Fire

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) – Governor Jerry Brown declares a State of Emergency in response to the Carr Fire.

The National Guard will be joining state and local firefighters as the fire is spreading rapidly, scorching at least 28,763 acres as of Thursday evening.

Cal Fire confirmed one fatality Thursday evening. The victim was a dozer operator, who has not been identified yet pending family notification.

The fire grew 15,000 aces overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, and by evening took on another 8,000 acres.

Mandatory evacuations are in place, and officials are telling people to be prepared to leave at any moment.

An evacuation center has been opened up at Shasta College as of Thursday. There is also refuge at Weaverville Elementary School.

Firefighters have been working to reinforce containment lines, but estimated containment actually dipped own from 10% to 6% between Thursday morning and evening.

Continued hot and dry weather forecasted for the rest of the week, with triple digit temperatures.

The fire began Monday in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, due to a vehicle mechanical failure.

SR-299W remains closed as of Thursday, with Caltrans District 2 saying there is no timetable yet for re-opening.

At least 15 structures have been destroyed in the Carr Fire.
