Samoa, Ca., (KIEM) The Humboldt County community grabbed their sand shovels, buckets and water, and hats to head to the beach for the Sand Sculpture Festival in Samoa put on by Friends of the Dunes, Saturday.

A sand whale, sea turtles and much more were the focal point of today’s sand festival.

Many showed up for support while others entered to win. Some sand sculptures were more obvious to identify than others. One, in particular, came with a message.

“I think everybody who was on our team and we hope many of the beach goers here too think that recycling and being sustainable and all these values are important to them,” said Madison Peters. “So we are trying to capture our audience by making them think a little bit.”

Sand sculptors from the adults to the kids, shared that creating was the best part but all was extremely time consuming.

The Sand Sculpture Festival offered cash awards in the following categories: Best of Show, Most Imaginative, Best Youth Sculpture for sculptors 12 and under, Most Dedicated Diggers, People’s Choice and Friends of the Dunes Staff Pick. The coveted Golden Shovel Award is given to the best business sponsored team

Nearly 500 people came out to this year’s Sand Sculpture Festival.
