Eureka., Ca- Will the North Eucalyptus Trees along highway 101 stay or go? This question has been a primary concern since the start of the Humboldt Bay Trail, but now there’s a plan in place to set some boundaries. After a report from Deputy Director of Public Works Hank Seemann, members of the community were allowed to comment on the proposed Humboldt Bay Waterfront Trail Project. Which would connect Eureka to Arcata by paved trail.

The area of concern is ‘Segment 7” also known as the North Eucalyptus Trees. During the Board of Supervisors meeting this morning the community was split. Those who see the trees as a historic landmark and those who see it as a safety hazard, both shared their points of view for the all members of the board of supervisors, but District 1 Supervisor Rex Bohn. The end of the meeting concluded with the Board unanimously agreeing to move forward with the project, but before the removal of the Eucalyptus trees two arborist will be hired to present an assessment on the risk involved with the keeping of the trees.

We’ll wait to hear the latest on this project at the next supervisors meeting on August 21st. The project is anticipated to cost just over 20 –million dollars, while construction will begin in 2021.
