Eel Fire sparks in Mendocino County, in addition to Mendocino Complex Fire

MENDOCINO COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) – A new fire, being called the Eel Fire, is causing need for mandatory evacuations in Mendocino County as of Tuesday.

Mandatory evacuation orders were put in place this evening for the already 865 acre fire.

Evacuees are recommended to travel east on US Forest Highway 7.

The Mendocino Sheriff’s Office said on Tuesday night evacuees who need shelter could check in at the Covelo Fire Station.

Mendocino Complex Fire

The Eel Fire is a new problem for Mendocino, which is already battling the Mendocino Complex Fire, burning in Mendocino and Lake counties.

The Mendocino Complex Fire is a combined 80,408 acres as of Tuesday night, and is made up of the Ranch and River fires.

The 51,539 acre Ranch Fire is 10% contained, and the 28,869 acre River Fire is 12% contained, as of Tuesday night.

At least seven buildings have been destroyed by the Mendocino Complex Fire, and another 12,200 are threatened.

Over 2,000 firefighters are up against the Mendocino Complex, which has pulled resources from across the state.
