Humboldt County will soon be connected to the internet with a whole new path. Today we spoke to the executive director with Access Humboldt to find out more.

In 2016, the Public Utilities Commission of California authorized a $3.6 million grant fund. And just last week the release of the California Advanced Services Fund was granted to Siskiyou Telephone Company.

This project will pull a 16 mile underground fiber link from Happy Camp to Somes Bar. And the last mile connections to 10 unserved households and a USFS campground in Siskiyou County.

The program granting these funds supports construction of new networks in areas where there aren’t adequate networks.

The commission has reviewed this project and finds it will have no significant effects on the environment with the incorporation of mitigation measures.

Connie Stewart at the California Center for Rural Policy is leading the regional effort and acting as the liaison with the state funding program. She is familiar with the developmental process of the project. We reached out to her and have yet to hear back.
