Eureka, Ca., (KIEM) Driving on Harrison Avenue near Harris Street you may see a little blue box with stickers attached.

Traveling on M Street near 14th Street you’ll see another and several others around the City of Eureka, but what are they? Cooperation Humboldt calls the blue boxes, The Little Free Pantry.

“It’s a tangible way for us to demonstrate our belief that food is a fundamental human right,” said, Tamara McFarland, Food Coordinator of Cooperation Humboldt. “And shouldn’t be dependent on someone’s wealth or income.”

If you were to pull the handle, you’ll find books, food, personal hygiene products plus more.

A Eureka resident shared that she loves donating, has donated, and will continue to donate, when her designated pantry on Harrison Avenue, runs low.

“Assistance that is out there for people through government agencies isn’t always helping everyone…so this way, as a community we are doing something to help each other.”

Organizers of Cooperation Humboldt said the little free pantry was created to help a community in need. So please, they expressed, take what you need and leave what you can.

If you’d like to be a pantry steward you can email Cooperation Humboldt with your name and location where you like to place the box and if you’d like to contribute supplies to an existing pantry, you can join the organization’s Facebook page to hear about specific needs and locations as they arise.
