EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) – Eureka’s St. Joseph Hospital staged a mass casualty disaster exercise this morning from 8 a.m. – 11a.m. Staff of St. Joseph conduct these drills twice a year to test the hospitals ability to accommodate a sudden influx of patients during an emergency situation.

This was all staged with actors, volunteers, and nurses.
Eighty hospital employees, five different departments (Emergency, Surgery, Facilities, Admission, and Administration), 25 victims being transported to the hospital by ground ambulance and personal vehicles.

Staff of the hospital say mass casualty disasters are stressful situations as it is, and the more prepared they are, the smoother it’ll go. After the exercise, participants of the drill gathered for a debriefing to discuss what went well and what they can improve on going forward. This drill did not affect patient care.
