With car theft on the rise, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s office warns the community to not fall victim to what’s called “smash and grab”.

Contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t just happen overnight, it often will happen in broad daylight. Beam says it can take as little as 30 seconds for a successful smash and grab.

He tells me car thieves look out for anything from electronic devices, to paperwork that may provide personal information. He says thieves will use anything from rocks and hammers, to elbows for the break-ins. Beam advises to take the extra step to remove any valuables from your vehicle when you’re not in it.
