Del Norte Sheriff’s Office says ‘no immediate threat’ to community, school safety

CRESCENT CITY, Ca. (KIEM) – The Del Norte Sheriff’s Office says there is no need to panic, as social media rumors stir concerns over school safety on Thursday. If these scares continue, schools will be forced to install tripod turnstiles to ensure everyone who enters the grounds is searched and cleared to enter.

Del Norte Sheriff Erik Apperson took to Facebook to address concerned residents about a post that was shared by many, conveying a threat to Del Norte County Schools. Apperson says the threat was already investigated by multiple agencies, back in February, and proved to be unfounded. Here is what he wrote:

I’m unable to respond to everyone sending me links and private messages in any amount of reasonable time. Many of you have seen the posts regarding a threat to our schools and our children within this community. As there are juveniles involved, I can’t freely give out all of the information regarding this investigation.

That said, the investigation began many months ago. The claims being made are not new news. Multiple agencies, including the school district are in the loop and the threats have been determined to be not viable but the matter continues to be attended to. Mental Health, Foster Care, Juvenile Hall and the Del Norte County Sheriffs Office are just a few of the organizations that have collaboratively assessed the allegations.

At this time there is no viable threat to the safety of Del Norte County Schools. Our Public Information Officer at the DNSO will be posting a press release regarding this matter within the next couple hours to the Del Norte Sheriffs Office Facebook page.

This post was later shared on the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Facebook page:

*****JAMES REITTERER*****

The above name is causing a stir on social media this afternoon and we would like to help calm and defuse the issue before it grows into something it shouldn’t.

First and most importantly, there is no immediate threat to the community and more specifically Del Norte County Schools. The information being put out today actually happened this last February. There was an investigation that was determined to be unfounded and included the cooperation of the school district and local mental health.

The case and all people involved continue to be monitored and there is no viable threat at this time.
