Made up of the Ranch and River fires, the complex reached a total of about 459,123 acres. For perspective, California’s previous largest wildfire was 281,893 acres, that being the Thomas Fire, just last year.

The Mendocino Complex destroyed hundreds of homes, and caused the death of one Utah firefighter, Battalion Chief Matthew Burchett.

On Wednesday, firefighters finished gaining containment around the entire perimeter of the massive Mendocino Complex. Their next goal is to strengthen control lines.
