Mini golf for a good cause

Somoa, Ca., (KIEM) Saturday a charity group stepped up in partnership with the American Diabetes Association and Lighthouse Plaza to fight against diabetes, a disease that kills millions worldwide, annually.

Ladies of the Order of the Amaranth came up with the idea to golf for a good cause. People from all over Humbldt County joined the ladies hoping to putt a hole in one, all in the name of research.

Participant Bill Mcglathery, who is also a Mckinleyville resident, shared why this day is means a lot to him.

“I lost my father recently to to diabetes it was horrifying you know because there isn’t a cure for it. They need to come up with a cure,” expressed Mcglathery.

“Since 1979 we have raised in the United States alone over $16 million for diabetes research” said Leslie Routt, Diabetic Coordinator and member of the Order of the Amaranth. “If you know someone with an insulin pump they can thank Amaranth because we’re the ones who supported the researcher, and funding lasts for three year’s for that researcher.”

100% of the proceeds go to the American Diabetes Association. In addition 14 locals business also joined the fight by sponsoring Saturday’s event.
