Sightsee on the Mad River Railroad Crew Speeder Car

Samoa, Ca., (KIEM) September 22, may be the last official day of the summer season but for the Timber Heritage Associate, the Arcata and Mad River Railroad Crew Speeder Car is still chugging for business.

Families and friends, side by side, rode along a four mile round trip ride from the town of Samoa, along the beautiful Humboldt Bay to Manila.

Board member for the association shared that riding the speeder is an opportunity to sightsee but also gives those a chance to learn about where they live.

“Humboldt County is unique we had the Redwood Log logging industry here for over 100 years,” shared Ron Fritzsche, Board member of Timber Heritage Associate. “Kids now, especially living in Humboldt County don’t know much about railroads even though they are still a big business in the United States. It gives them a chance to see railroads operations and see some of the railroading equipment and they love it because a lot of the kids have a little Thomas the tank and they love trains.”

Timber Heritage volunteers restored the speeder in 2009 and association began offering rides in the summer of 2009.
