Annual salsa competition helps promote county’s Nutrition Education Program

Arcata, Ca., (KIEM) Nearly 35 students from eight local schools grades 4 through 6 battled it out to see who will be named the champion of this year’s 9th Annual Salsa Recipe Competition in Arcata.

The spicy competition is a part of the Humboldt County Office of Educations effort to foster its Nutrition Education Program and a chance for students to learn about the importance of eating local fruits and veggies.

Weeks prior to the competition, teams from county schools were mentored by some of the finest county chefs making sure they were on top of their salsa skills.

“Getting kids familiar and excited about fruit and vegetables, that’s really what we are focusing on,” shared Nutrition Program Manager, Linda Prescott. “Salsa is one of those recipes that is a really simple recipe but it lends itself into a lot of creativity, plus we hold it this time of year when we have our local fruit and vegetable available.”

Teams competed for awards in many different categories including, presentation and use of local produce. The competition was open for the public to determine which team will receive the People’s Choice Award.
