Emergency Declared on Humboldt Bay Harbor

EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM) – An emergency is declared on the Humboldt Bay Harbor, putting many agencies in the North Coast on high alert.

The entrance to Humboldt Bay Harbor is severely shallow. It’s now considered life-threatening. The water is so shoaled in, that it’s affecting both recreational and commercial boaters.

The Humboldt Bay Bar Pilots, have limited the depths of ships coming into the bay to twenty-one feet. So far, no fuel barges are being affected.

According to US Army Corps of Engineers, this year’s winter storm is what caused the water to become so shallow.

The Harbor District is working with the US Army Corps of Engineers. As well as the Coast Guard to fix the issue. The plan is to bring a dredge.

They’re hoping to solve the problem in the upcoming months.
