Local fire crews to educate public for National Fire Prevention Week

Humboldt County, Ca., (KIEM) National Fire Prevention Week kicks off this week running from October 6-12.

The theme of this year’s prevention week is “Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape.”

Local fire districts including Arcata Fire will take the time to show families and local students how to be prepared in case of a house fire.

Arcata Fire said every second counts when you are in a fire.

“Make sure you have working smoking alarms in your house,” said Fire Chief Justin McDonald. “Check them once a month just to make sure they’re working. And every time you change your clocks for daylight savings, change out the batteries if they have the old 9-volt style. New smoke alarms now come with a 10-year battery pack which is really great because you don’t have to worry about batteries anymore.
