National Fire Prevention Week Continues, American Red Cross Urging Fire Escape Plan

HUMBOLDT COUNTY (KIEM)– National Fire Prevention Week continues and the American Red Cross is urging everyone to practice their home fire escape plan and test their smoke alarms.

Your fire escape plan should include two ways to get out of each room. You should select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from your home and practice your escape plan until everyone can get out in two minutes or less.

Make sure to install smoke alarms on every level of your home, placing them inside and outside of bedrooms and sleeping areas.

Lastly, test smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries at least once a year.

Over the last five years, Red Cross volunteers from the California Northwest Chapter have made one-thousand seven-hundred and sixty households safer from home fire threats.

They’ve also installed four-thousand four-hundred and sixty-six smoke alarms.

In total, they’ve reached four-thousand nine-hundred and twenty-five children through preparedness programs.
