ARCATA - Members of the Arcata Professional Firefighters Association set up on all four corners of the Arcata Plaza to Fill the Boot for MDA.

Union members hoped to raise $3,000 today as people emptied their pockets to fill the boot. The money supports research and a summer camp for kids living with muscle diseases.

NORTH COAST - Those first boats of crabbers are bringing in the initial harvest of North Coast Dungeness and for some it hasn’t been the bounty that was hoped for.

The weather hasn’t been ideal with winds off the coast and although first pulls of pots produced some nice results, follow-ups didn’t. There’s still a lot of fishing to do before the July 15 closure.

McKinleyville - Law enforcement is looking for a masked man who allegedly robbed a McKinleyville pizza parlor.

Just after 8:15 Friday night, a male suspect walked into Smug’s Pizza on the 2200 block of Central Avenue, brandished a black handgun and told the employee to empty the till. He was able to escape on foot with an unknown amount of cash.

EUREKA - A Eureka gas station was robbed early Friday morning and authorities continue to search for the suspect.

ARCATA - It’s a monumental time in a person’s life, graduating from college. More than 1,700 students at Humboldt State will be accomplishing that goal Saturday. 

HSU will have three commencement ceremonies at the Redwood Bowl, at 8:30, noon and 3:30. The school says to arrive early to find parking because 5,000 to 7,000 people will be on campus to see their loved one’s walk the stage....
