KING SALMON - A brush fire in King Salmon was sparked by minors playing with matches.

The fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon in the grassy area along Buhne Drive at Halibut.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze. No structures were threatened and no injuries reported.

Witnesses saw kids playing in the area and a book of matches was located near the fire’s ignition...

FORTUNA – The vehicle allegedly involved in a fatal hit and run in Fortuna on Tuesday has been recovered by authorities. CHP says they have a suspect but are not releasing the name at this time.

ARCATA - The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is awarding over 1 million dollars in grant money for conservation projects and HSU is one of the recipients.

The Big Game Grant Program will award $205,000 to the university for studying Roosevelt Elk populations in Humboldt and Del Norte counties.

EUREKA - A Eureka man convicted of voluntary manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon was sentenced to 11-years in prison Wednesday. Derek Payton admitted to the crimes.

REDWOOD NATIONAL AND STATE PARK - Park authorities are asking the public’s help in identifying a possible suspect in a string of burglaries in two state parks.

The incidents took place back on May 31st at Redwood National and State Park as well as Prairie Creek State Park. Two visitor centers and an employee residence were broken into and items were stolen.
